Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when track officials were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his compromised front wing
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be permitted to just dash across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is currently investigating the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the FIA
"During the third lap, safety personnel were informed and made ready to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded and a double yellow flag was shown in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired after that point"
