The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against George Abaraonye achieved the required two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.
The dispute erupted after the student reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on this week.
Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.
Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, the student claimed that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response categorically refuted that any representative appointed by the student had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.
The student stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.
His comment added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The letter accused the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".
The statement indicated that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The society had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the society in May.
